What Is So Special About Mighty Musical Membership?

Having worked in 2 large secondary music departments in the UK, it came as a bit of a shock to me when I moved to become Head of Music in a smaller school all on my own.

I quickly realised that what I really wanted was a bunch of amazing musicians to bounce ideas off.

What I had was me.

And countless folders of resources.

And hours of indecision and insecurity.

CLICK HERE IF THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU!
Despite being an experienced teacher I felt a bit lost having to start from scratch and launch a department from zero.
Like you, I scoured the internet for inspiration and wasted hours looking at resources that weren't suitable or were half made, or, quite frankly, just weren't very high standard.

And then disaster struck.

My Story.....

With the rest of Performing Arts off on long-term sick my workload steadily rose.  I put on a Summer Showcase, planned a musical, created cover work and coped with a string of supply staff and even 'permanent' staff who just didn't stay.  I did lunch and break duties, attended 'very important meetings'  and ran clubs for music and drama.  At the request of SLT I took data off the online analysing system, put it into spreadsheets and analysed it manually (WHY???? What is the point of SISRA if we must all do this????).  I planned, assessed, marked and photocopied until I could take no more.

Inevitably I fell behind with my planning and my teaching started to suffer.  Workload ground me down and I finally ended up on one of those 'not-at-all-supportive-support-plans'.  Despite trying my hardest and working the longest hours I ever had in my 14 year career SLT were not happy.  I was overwhelmed and stressed.

So I started to think about the resources I had bought.  I realised that apart from the fact some of them were inaccurate or just poorly presented that they were also very inflexible.  They all ran along the lines of 'This is for Year 7.  Here is the lesson plan.  Here is the Powerpoint.  Here are worksheets that can never be altered to suit your classes because they are PDF'.

I decided to take a different approach.  I figured out a better way to plan with more flexibility to deliver age and ability appropriate lessons.  Instead of writing a project about 'Pachelbel's Canon', I would write about Baroque music, making it 'Pick 'n' Mix' and highly adaptable by laying out all the contextual information alongside composition, listening and performance ideas.  I could then pick parts of this for KS2 visits, teach it to KS3 and even take parts and use for GCSE classes.
So now, as well as still teaching (in a different school now, in case you were wondering), I help others to overcome the problems I faced, by supplying flexible, high quality and fully editable resources all in one place.

Why Should I Pay When I Can Do This Work Myself?

Let's look at the maths......

UK teachers are contracted to work 1265 hours per year.

After tax, a first year UK teacher's pay is around £20 per hour.

A teacher on the Upper Pay Scale (after around 7 years) earns around £29 per hour.

For a maximum of just one hours' pay, all the extra thinking, workload and hours could be taken away from you.
