Having worked in 2 large secondary music departments in the UK, it came as a bit of a shock to me when I moved to become Head of Music in a smaller school all on my own.
I quickly realised that what I really wanted was a bunch of amazing musicians to bounce ideas off.
What I had was me.
And countless folders of resources.
And hours of indecision and insecurity.CLICK HERE IF THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU!
Inevitably I fell behind with my planning and my teaching started to suffer. Workload ground me down and I finally ended up on one of those 'not-at-all-supportive-support-plans'. Despite trying my hardest and working the longest hours I ever had in my 14 year career SLT were not happy. I was overwhelmed and stressed.
So I started to think about the resources I had bought. I realised that apart from the fact some of them were inaccurate or just poorly presented that they were also very inflexible. They all ran along the lines of 'This is for Year 7. Here is the lesson plan. Here is the Powerpoint. Here are worksheets that can never be altered to suit your classes because they are PDF'.
Let's look at the maths......
UK teachers are contracted to work 1265 hours per year.
After tax, a first year UK teacher's pay is around £20 per hour.
A teacher on the Upper Pay Scale (after around 7 years) earns around £29 per hour.
How many hours does it take you to plan lessons and create resources? What could you be doing with that time instead?
Hello TIME for family, adventures and living life!
Goodbye WORKLOAD and OVERWHELM!
Yes, you could do this planning yourself.
But not in 1 hour.
And probably not with all the other stuff you have to do.
